Safe Alternatives For Youth (SAFY)

Safe Alternatives For Youth (SAFY) is an independent, not-for-profit organization based in Kirinyabigo Kanaala Zone Mutundwe. We support some of the world's most disadvantaged young people, helping them to achieve their potential in a safe and healthy environment. SAFY was established in 2004, in response to the continued vulnerability of young people in Uganda to HIV/AIDS, and to the lack of appropriate youth health services. SAFY is registered under number S.5014/3865.

This project introduces youth (both in and out of school) to the art of storytelling through digital filmmaking while providing critical mentoring and technical support to ensure participant efficacy and success.

The films address a specific social issue that affects the youth in the community e.g. drug abuse, teenage pregnancy, safe sex, idleness, hard work, etc. through filmmaking the youth find a way to work with the reality that surrounds them – it’s a way to reflect upon this reality and share their thoughts and experiences with others. This helps youth reach their full potential and is the good way to prevent them from engaging in risky behaviors

In 2018, Safy established a community radio currently located at the office premises. It is a radio by the youth and for the youth. The radio presents an opportunity to young presenters to talk about issues affecting youth in their community. Young people as listeners have an opportunity to choose the thematic of each edition and Members of the community and specialists are invited in the studio to debate with the young audience. Messages to raise awareness about important issues are passed in a creative way, using music and jingles to attract the attention of young people.
